CONCEPT
You have no whimsy is a collective project that emerged during a Performance Art class at MSU Denver in spring 2026, centered on a prop: the emergency blanket. Beginning with this material, the project evolved into an n-1 body –headless, collective, unstable, and perpetually shifting nature. We were/are interested in exploring how the blanket could transcend its conventional interpretation as solely an emergency or survival object and instead function as a temporary skin, a sign, a shelter, a body, a sound surface, or a fragile collective structure.
PROCESS
Group clowning (absurd, entangled, collective bodily movement), wrapping, hiding, grouping, or isolating bodies with the blankets. Deciphering and re-contextualizing the rescue blanket by shifting its reading from an emergency object to a flag, identity, label, isolator, temporary skin, or sign of care/abandonment.
Creating a temporary heterotopia within an exciting infrastructure. Interrupting the normal flow or structure of the hallway, classroom, sidewalk, stairwell, entrance, or other transitional spaces.
Building a small ‘encampment’ or tribe-like setup. Using tents, blankets, and other materials to create a small community that wouldn’t usually be found in non-places or would be removed.
Use the blanket as an active sonic surface. Attach contact microphones directly to the blankets and wire them to the PA system so every fold, friction, drag, tear, and bodily interaction is amplified and becomes part of the soundscape.
